The story of how our new family member came to be…
Well kind of. I will skip ahead to the point in time where I found him.
It all began on a day much like today. It was around 6:45 in the morning and I was walking from my car into work, as I do each day Monday-Friday. All of a sudden, right before I get to the steps, I hear a small “meow”. I turn around and what do I see? A small (and I mean very small) kitten curled up by the garbage can. I look around to see if there are any others or a mother and quickly realize this little critter was alone.
Before I continue, you must understand how I am when it comes to animals. If I see a dog running along the side of the road, I will try to catch it to see if it has a tag, or to take it to the animal rescue league. Growing up we constantly had animals because I would always bring strays home. I have even taken injured dogs to vets before to get care ( I won’t go into the story of the time I saw a car hit a dog and drive off… that one STILL irks me. However, I saved the little guy and all ended okay). So basically, my instinct is to help any animal that comes my way.
Back to the story at hand. After realizing the critter was alone I scoop him up and take him to my car. I decide to wait until a co-worker comes to help watch him while I grab my computer. My plan was to take him home until the ARL opened (my gut said he was too young to honestly even be adopted yet). My co-worker arrived and volunteered to take him to her home until we could take him to the rescue league. At around 11:00 that day we head to her house to pick him up and headed to the ARL. We asked if we could name him Jasper after the founder of Fishers son (seemed fitting since I found him at work) and we head out knowing Jasper would receive great care.
You would think that would be the end of the story, wouldn’t you? Nope! Silly me, I just can’t leave things alone. Last Thursday I emailed the ARL before I left work for the long weekend to check up on Jasper and see how he was doing and to be sure that they contacted me if they had a hard time finding him a home. Fast forward to Tuesday of this week.
I get to work from my long weekend to find a reply from the rescue league regarding Jasper. I was so excited to hear how the little guy was doing. Well, when I opened the email the reply was not exactly what I expected. They stated Jasper was doing well and was ready for adoption and they had given him his shots and he was ready for me to pick him up.
My mouth dropped. Uh oh, slight miscommunication. I quickly email Dan to explain the situation. Next thing I know, we decide to pick up Jasper that day. Dan is actually a cat lover (he grew up with cats) and was okay with the idea of adopting the little guy since compared to dogs, cats are really quite easy to care for. And after all, it all kind of felt like it was meant to be.
Tuesday night we stocked up on kitty supplies and now Jasper is happily a part of the family. He fits right in (he LOVES attention) and the dogs are handling the new addition really well. I am fairly certain Lola things it is her baby. And I am fairly certain Jasper thinks Harlow is his mom. ;)
Yes, it makes for a slightly chaotic home. But a very fun chaotic home.
